Every now and then I get completely mesmerised by spectacular, super-flashy pieces of labradorite. This gorgeous golden labradorite just so happens to be one of those magnificent specimens. It has the most amazing bright gold flash across the top of its face that contains the merest hint of a green tinge, inky-blue islands lower down with a thin coppery line bordering between the upper gold expanse and pale blue splashes at the base. The reverse side is just as flashy and beautiful.

The stone itself has a nice, solid depth, with slightly asymmetrical finish at the top. (Slightly rounded at the top left of the face, with the top right being slightly more ‘squared’. This is a detail that is barely perceptible under the sterling silver framework.) The multiple sterling silver wires provide a secure framework around the sides, with a simple pretty curve across the base, allowing the radiance of this beautiful piece to shine forth unhindered.

The captivating beauty of labradorite is provided by the Schiller Effect, when vibrant, iridescent colours burst from within the stone as light strikes and reflects off it at just the right angle. These iridescent colourful flashes often seem to open up magical portals inside, what can first appear to be, fairly nondescript dark or grey stones. This particular specimen is so flashy, it’s hard to view it without colours reflecting back at you.

The structure of labradorite consists of lines of cleavage within that can, at times, appear as if there are fractures carrying through to the surface of the stone. The majority of the surface of this labradorite is smooth and polished, with one line ‘breaching the surface’ on the face. It’s one of those details that’s basically imperceptible.

This labradorite pendant truly is spectacular, and would make such an amazing gift, either for yourself or someone else dear to your heart. I recommend you wear it on one of your favourite sterling silver chains.

You’ll receive your pendant beautifully presented, tied into a classic Kathryn Jane Design jewellery box with silver-coloured thread. If purchasing as a gift, and you’d like the pendant presented on a chain, silver-coloured display chains and sterling silver belcher chains are available. The display chains are for presentation purposes only, (not for wearing the pendant on). The sterling silver chains are generally 45cm and 60cm long, but please feel free to contact me if you’d like a chain made to a unique length. The connector rings at each end are pinched closed with the greatest of care. They are not, however, soldered.

For each Kathryn Jane Design creation, labradorite has been carefully selected so the greatest display of colour is when the stone is in an upright position, as when being worn as a pendant. When attempting to photograph labradorite pendants from the same direction the light is coming from, a shadow, and sometimes reflection, is cast over the highly polished surface of the stone’s face, making it very difficult to fully capture the glorious display of colour. The most success seems to be when photos are taken on a slight angle.

A wee note about the images:
I attempt to take crisp, sharp photographs that can be zoomed in on to clearly show the details of the gemstone pendants. In doing so, the pendants are then being viewed at a much larger size than in real life, so details of the stones’ structure are exaggerated. Many is the time I’ve viewed a photograph and seen a detail that I simply don’t perceive when viewing the pendant up close with ‘ma naked eyes’.
Also, please be mindful that individual colour settings on monitors or device screens may alter the appearance of the colour of pendants. Multiple photos are taken on my smartphone, usually indoors and out, in an effort to best capture the colour of the stone. (With labradorite, I try to capture images without the display of colours showing, and then with the light revealing the amazing display of flashy colour in all its magnificence.)
If you’d like to see further images, please feel free to  contact Kathryn.
