Caring for Your Pendant
Artistic Formation
Honouring the unique expression of the stone, your pendant has been meticulously handcrafted, all the while holding the highest intentions for you, its eventual wearer.
A balance has been found between flamboyant artistry and practicality, enabling your one-of-a-kind piece to become wearable art.
The continuity of the ‘threads’ supporting the inner gem, then folding over to form the loop from which the pendant hangs, feels highly symbolic to me. It’s like gathering and integrating the many facets of our lives to create cohesion, drawing upon our multiple strengths to support and frame the unique expression of our authentic selves.
The ends of the threads either encircle the lower part of the bail or are trimmed. More metaphor! Of the rich tapestry of our past experiences, some things are simply meant to be released, while others are to be retained to provide further strength and foundation to our being, enabling our lights to shine forth spectacularly.
Given the artistic construction of your pendant, please take particular care when wearing it with fine, loose-weave clothing, as the framework may catch on delicate fibres, potentially damaging the fabric or pulling some of the pendant’s finer details, such as spirals, out of shape.
A Gentle Buff
Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time. Wearing your pendant regularly may help slow this process, while storing it in an airtight bag when not being worn can help minimise tarnishing.
If your pendant needs a little freshening, gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. A silver polishing cloth can help restore the shine of sterling silver, but please take care around the gemstone. Some stones are porous or particularly delicate, and polishing products may damage their surface. Avoid letting the polishing cloth touch the stone, and if you’re unsure of the best cleaning method, please get in touch before attempting to clean it.
If your silver pendant includes accents of another metal, such as gold-filled wire or coated copper, take care not to polish these areas with a silver polishing cloth. Instead, gently wipe them with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
Personally, I regard sterling silver as rather hardy, and for many years I wore my ‘Freedom!’ freeform labradorite pendant continually, whether swimming, hiking or showering. Admittedly, since I began wearing a new labradorite beauty — as seen in the welcome image — I’ve become a little more mindful!
Although I’ve enjoyed wearing silver this way, I recommend removing your pendant before showering or swimming, particularly in chlorinated pools or salt water. Gemstones vary in their ability to withstand water, chemicals and changes in temperature, so a little extra care can go a long way towards preserving your pendant’s beauty.
A Gentler Buff
Pendants incorporating 14K gold-filled wire benefit from a little extra care. To help protect the gold surface from scratches and wear, avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, chlorine, salt water, cosmetics and perfumes. It’s also best to remove your pendant before heavy exercise.
After wearing, gently wipe the gold-filled wire with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid silver polishing cloths and abrasive cleaners, which may damage the surface over time.
Treat coated copper in a similar fashion. The coating helps protect the copper from tarnishing, so avoid abrasive polishing products and use only a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe it gently.
When not wearing your pendant, store it somewhere cool and dry, ideally in its jewellery box or an airtight bag, away from other jewellery that could scratch or catch on its framework.
Happily Ever After . . .
I hope you love wearing your beautiful new pendant as much as I have loved creating it for you. May you treasure it for many years to come.
Warm wishes,
Kathryn
